The National Weather Service released its latest spaghetti model projections late this morning which show Hurricane Irma’s potential path appears to have shifted westward, over western North Carolina and Tennessee.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper’s emergency response team announced several measures, including activating the National Guard, suspending all roadwork and lane closures, and recalling emergency workers who had traveled to Texas to assist in recovery measures in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

Emergency Management Director Mike Sprayberry said the state’s federal emergency management partners, would arrive in North Carolina on Sunday.

The National Weather Service’s Nick Petro, said the latest spaghetti model “forecast is becoming clearer” that North Carolina will experience a “significant Tropical Storm or Hurricane” impact.

Petro said the mountainous western region of North Carolina would face serious dangers of flooding and mudslides, but also cautioned that coastal areas would face high rip-tide and storm surge risks.

Hurricane Irma Update:

According to the National Weather Service the updated predictions of Hurricane Irma’s storm path show the storm following a path through inland Georgia and South Carolina.

 

Predictions for Monday show a fairly wide range of impact areas from central Tennessee to the Raleigh Durham area of North Carolina.

The Wilmington/Cape Fear area lies to the far eastern edge of the predicted path. The Outer Banks are currently outside the predicted path.

The Wednesday afternoon National Weather Service storm track update noted that a northerly turn of Hurricane Irma is looking more likely by the weekend leaving the possibility that the storm could hit Georgia as well as South and North Carolina by early next week.

The agency also notes that the track is still somewhat uncertain.

As of 4 pm on Wednesday Irma was a category 5 hurricane moving eastward through the Caribbean, toward Puerto Rico.

“While a turn to the north is looking more and more likely by later this weekend, the uncertainty with the track, and subsequent impacts, remains high, especially for the Carolinas,” the National Weather Service update stated. “As a result of the expected northward movement the probability for at least tropical storm force winds is increasing across our area.”

A weekend of dangerous surf and rip currents is possible, according to the NWS.

“It’s too early to tell what specific surge, wind, rainfall, and tornado impacts could occur,” the update stated. “However, regardless of the ultimate track of the storm the combination of above normal astronomical tides and large wave action is likely to cause beach erosion which can further damage vulnerable coastal infrastructure previously damaged by Matthew.”

As the Port City begins gearing up for the solar eclipse coming up later this summer, party people across the Carolina’s are looking for a way to celebrate. Luckily, the North and South Carolina Space Grants have teamed up to coordinate dozens of viewing parties across the states, including one at Airlie Gardens, right here in Wilmington.

According to NASA, on Aug. 21, the moon will pass in front of the sun in a path that will be visible across the entire contiguous United States. That’s the first time in almost 100 years that Americans from coast to coast will be able to see a total eclipse. The last time anywhere in America saw a total solar eclipse was 1991.

Folks fortunate enough to live in the roughly 70-mile wide track of the eclipse as it moves from Oregon to South Carolina will have the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse, meaning the moon will cover the sun in its entirety.

Southeastern North Carolina is close, sitting just outside the full path. At 2:48 p.m., during the height of the eclipse, Wilmington will see a partial solar eclipse, with the moon covering up 96 percent of the sun.

Airlie Gardens, Cape Fear Museum, the National Weather Service (Wilmington Office) and the New Hanover County Public Library are working together to provide a “fun filled” afternoon for eclipse fans in the area.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., Airlie Gardens will host a series of family friendly games and educational activities on its lawn, where KONA Ice will be on hand selling treats for the party. The event will run until 3:30 p.m.

Once the eclipse begins, special viewing glasses will be available, courtesy of the UNCW Center for Education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (CESTEM), and the Carolina’s Solar Eclipse party.

The event is first come, first serve. Meaning there will be no pre-sale of tickets or reservations taken, so plan on arriving early.

The party costs $9 for adults, $5 for New Hanover County Residents, and members of the Military (with ID), and $3 for children ages 4 to 12.

Admission is free for members of Airlie Gardens and Cape Fear Museum.

The Cape Fear Blues Festival in Wilmington, NC, features bands performing at venues around town from June 23rd, 2017 to June 25th, 2017.

A recent performance at The Rusty Nail – Home to the Cape Fear Blues Society

The Cape Fear Blues Society is based out of The Rusty Nail club on South 5th Avenue.

That’s where the Cape Fear Blues Society (CFBS) puts on their weekly blues jam, where any musician who walks through the door is invited to perform.

Local acts like Rose Lucas, Randy McQuay, and RootSoul Project are regulars. “We have a very, very rich and vibrant music scene here,” says Lan Nichols, the society’s president.

Since its founding in 1987, CFBS has expanded to include programs like this, plus an annual summer blues festival, giving Wilmingtonians a chance to experience performances by local and professional blues musicians.

“Blues music has always played a role in the entertainment in the Cape Fear region,” Nichols says.
CFBS’s weekly jams keep blues music vibrant and active not only in the Port City, but in the entire Old North State.

Formed in 1987, the Cape Fear Blues Society was established by a small group of blues supporters in Wilmington, North Carolina.

In 1995, expansion and change created greater interest in Blues music and the CFBS developed into a larger, all-inclusive organization that welcomes listeners, musicians and Blues enthusiasts from all walks of life. Along with a vibrant network of Blues societies all across North Carolina, the CFBS continues to produce, promote and present the Blues for the benefit of our community.
